How to Calculate Soil Cation Exchange Capacity

This short video will explain how Cation Exchange Capacity, Base Cation Saturation, and Calcium Saturation are calculated and related.

Cation Exchange Capacity measures total quantity of negatively charged exchange sites. Provides information on a soil's potential to hold nutrients.

Base Cation Saturation measures how much of the CEC is occupied by base cation (vs acidic). Directly related to pH.

Calcium (or Magnesium) Saturation measures how much of the CEC is occupied by a specific cation. Some farmers manage their Base Cation Saturation Ratios (BCSR) to achieve an ideal ratio.
